External relations and customs
The importing retail business makes a significant contribution to providing consumers with a wide selection of cost-effective products. A significant proportion of consumer goods today come from countries outside the European Union. Opening up markets, combating protectionism and removing barriers to trade and protective tariffs will make imports as smooth as possible and give customers access to imported products.
At the same time, third-country companies selling to European customers must not gain undue competitive advantage: it is important to ensure that the same legal requirements apply to third-country companies selling to European customers as European importers.
The AVE has been involved in ensuring and constantly improving these framework conditions for import trade since its foundation in 1952. The AVE supports its members by providing timely information on changes in the law, advice or intervening in case of concrete problems.
